The black BMW, head on in the dark, headlights lit

SUNIL

You asked me how it's doing.

That was March. This is my answer. It took a while, because I wanted to get it right.

SCROLL

A STORY FOR SUNIL

READY

BY KOUSHIK SENNAAR

Before it was mine, it was his.

Sunil had bikes the way other people have seasons. One after another after another.

This one, he rode at night. Out on the lake roads, after the city had gone quiet and the tar had cooled.

And then, one day, it started sitting still.

It was waiting too.

I was always ready first.

Dressed. Helmet by the door. Every evening, before any of my friends.

It never mattered.

I couldn't leave until they came. And when they went home, I went home.

I was twenty-four. I had never bought a single thing for myself. No brothers, no sisters. Responsibilities early. Everything I earned had somewhere to be before it ever reached me.

So every morning, before anything else, I scrolled. A Continental GT. An RR 310.

Same maths every day. Same answer. Waiting for a number to change.

Then, one morning…

You were standing next to it when I came to look.

You told me why you were letting it go. That stays between us.

When you handed me the key, I said thank you. It wasn't nearly enough.

This is the rest of it.

By that evening it was parked outside my house. It didn't feel like a decision. It felt like recognising something.

It had been waiting for someone. I had been waiting for something.

That night, I got dressed. Helmet by the door. Out of habit, I sat down.

I looked at my phone.

Nobody to wait for.

I stood up.

Every eye on the road went to it.

Every single time.

Two days later, at a petrol pump, the two men working the forecourt argued over who got to fill it.

Nobody had ever argued over anything of mine before. Nobody had ever hurried for me at all.

It's the base variant. They didn't care. They saw a big black BMW, and that was the whole conversation.

Work meant meetings. Pitches. Agencies. A marketing guy, over tea.

SCENE 5 · TAKE 1 ARRIVED WITH: a friend.
KEPT WAITING: 40 minutes.
ME I really think we can help you. MARKETING GUY (eyes on his phone) Mm. Send me a deck.
SCENE 5 · TAKE 2 ARRIVED ON: the BMW.
KEPT WAITING: 0 minutes.
ME I really think we can help you. MARKETING GUY (already standing up) Sit, sit! Chai? Tell me everything.

Same shirt. Same pitch. Same me. Different answer.

It wasn't me they were respecting. Not yet.

But now I knew what it felt like. And I decided I'd earn it.

None of that is what I remember most.

The rain had just stopped. A cloudy evening, a small whisper of wind. Almost dark.

Just me and it, on the longest stretch of the Outer Ring Road I could get to.

Then the night came down.

Up on the flyover, there's only the high road. Every building around me, lit.

And this black machine under me, reflecting all of it.

At the top, I pulled over and switched it off.

Nobody was waiting for me.
I wasn't waiting for anybody.

I study film. I've watched a thousand shots. I've never seen a better one than that. And nobody else was there to see it.

I'd gone with a friend to get his bike fixed. A small garage, a narrow street.

Then the kids found it.

One of them, smaller than the rest, stopped shouting. He looked at the bike. Then at me.

KID(barely a whisper)Anna… one rev?

One. That's all he wanted.
One perfect rev.

Give it to him.

He was ready. I didn't make him wait.

I knew that face. I used to wear it.

A kid who stopped for every bike and every match, waiting to hear one perfect sound.

Wait. Is that me?

Somebody did that for me once.

Handed me the thing I'd wanted my whole life, and let me hear it.

You did, Sunil.

Some day, a kid is going to ask me what my first bike was.

That answer was decided on a morning in February. It's never going to change.

A black BMW.

You gave me that answer. I wanted you to know that you did.

The night rides still happen. Same roads.

Every evening. Dressed. Helmet by the door.

I'm still always ready first.

I just don't wait.

POST-CREDITS SCENE

The real film is coming.

I'm a film student. In March, I promised you a video of the bike. Then work happened, and life happened, and I went quiet on you for seven months.

I still owe you that film, and I'm making it. This page is me refusing to stay silent until it's done.
